This new technology has the advantage of offering a much greater amount of light than traditional bulbs, having the additional advantage that its energy consumption is much lower, so it is not uncommon for the LED to be gradually displacing the rest of lighting systems.
A boom from which the automotive sector is not free, in which the properties and characteristics of LEDs are of great help to create less polluting vehicles that illuminate the road in a safer and more efficient way. 1. The lighting capacity
Although we have launched a small “spoiler” in the presentation, the truth is that the lighting capacity of LED car bulbs is one of its strengths. In fact, compared to more traditional incandescent models, in which 95% of the energy was lost in the form of heat, current technology is capable of manufacturing LED lights for cars with a consumption of just 1 watt per 100 lumens of illumination.
A fundamental aspect for all types of vehicles, but especially in electric cars, in which every watt saved is one more step in their autonomy. Ciphering this increase in durability is somewhat complex, although some studies suggest that LED light can multiply the durability of a traditional halogen lamp by 5 to 10 times. An aspect that is a notable advantage when it comes to keeping the road illuminated, but also when it comes to buying new bulbs. Something fundamental, considering that modern cars almost have to be taken to a workshop for an operation as simple as changing a light bulb.
4. Flexibility in design
If we take a look at current vehicles, we will see how they increasingly have more aggressive body lines and more extreme elements in their design. An approach in which the headlights add character to the front of the vehicle, being an element of great importance for designers. In this context, the arrival of LED lights allows modifying the appearance of these headlights, since now it is not necessary to have space for a large bulb, a reflector and all the elements that were necessary in the past.
This evolution gives more space to both engineers, when fitting the interior engine parts, and designers, when creating the look of new vehicles. Therefore, it is another element favorable to LED lights compared to the older or traditional lighting systems.
5. The price
We have talked about light, brightness, design and safety. But the last aspect that we are going to highlight is also key to understanding the future success of LED lights. We talk about its price. As is already the case with domestic LED lights and bulbs, the price of creating LED headlights is considerably lower than that of making halogen or xenon bulbs. So the cost that automotive companies face to equip their vehicles with these headlights is reduced.
You also have to think that this LED light system is suitable for all the vehicle’s lights, so that the main headlights can be changed, but also other lights, such as position, brake, turn signal or even interior lights. Something that allows to increase the economies of scale in these manufacturing processes, further reducing the costs of these bulbs.
To top it off, we have already commented that LED lights consume less than the rest of the options we have on the market. Something that translates into lower consumption in electric vehicles and less pollution in combustion vehicles, which is also another help when it comes to saving development costs. Especially in traditional vehicles, in which the laws against pollution are increasingly strict.
