Learn how to start a car with a dead battery

If in the middle of the road the car has run out of battery or if when you start it one morning it simply does not start, this may mean that the battery has discharged. To the benefit of many, the problem may be easy to resolve and may not merit replacement of the car battery.

 

One of the faults that tends to appear more regularly in the car is a fault in the electrical part, which is usually linked to the operation and performance of the battery. So anyone who owns a vehicle is exposed to running out of battery at some point along the way.

One reality is that a car battery has a specific life span and it will eventually run out. Although batteries can serve for 10 years, little by little they degrade and present failures that are usually silent. For a battery to begin to show signs of wear, it is enough to try to start the car on a cold day and it will not start. Similarly, leaving the lights on when not needed also allows the battery to drain.

However, even if the battery has little power, once the engine has started, it will be the alternator that is in charge of providing the electrical energy for the operation of the car, through a constant voltage that comes from the battery between 13 and the 15 volts. 

Although the battery is one of the simplest elements to change or repair, there are those who do not have knowledge of mechanics and, if the car has faults being in a dangerous area, it will not be a good plan to start learning them at that moment. Therefore, it is appropriate to call the technical assistance service to send a crane.

 

 

 

With the help of the assistant, two alternatives are presented: on the one hand, an attempt will be made to start the car with a portable starter or with the tweezers. If it starts, the vehicle will not be able to be turned off and it is necessary to drive for more than 30 minutes for the alternator to return charge to the battery. If it does not start, it will be necessary to tow the car to the workshop to replace it. 

If you want to avoid calling insurance and you have battery clamps in the car, it will be possible to turn it on, but it is necessary to request the help of another car, either by calling a friend to come to the place or asking another driver to stop. 

Although this is an efficient mechanism, it is not recommended for latest generation vehicles. So if it is a car with more than 15 years on the market, there will be no problem. If it is one of the newest, even if it has the best car battery on the market, this will not prevent voltage spikes from damaging the electrical system and damaging sensors, thus being little recommended and a technique that should only be applied in an emergency. 

For new cars, the solution would be to make use of portable starters. These devices are equipped with electronic regulators that prevent voltage spikes from being generated. 

 

Beware of tweezers

In the case of using clamps, it is necessary that before connecting you make sure that they are of good quality and with thick cables, as well as with a sufficient length to make the connection between both cars comfortably and safely. 

In this case, the order of the factors does affect the product, so the first thing is to connect the red cable to the positive polarity of the charged battery and then the other end of this cable must go to the positive polarity of the low battery. Next, the black clamp must be connected to the negative polarity of the charged battery, while the other end of this cable must go to the negative terminal of the car with the discharged battery.

Subsequently, the car should be started with the battery charged and the engine should be kept at about two thousand revolutions per minute. Afterwards, the unloaded car’s starter must be activated and, after a few seconds, it will turn on. 

 

 

 

After starting the car it is necessary to disconnect the clamps. To do this, the reverse order of the first connection must be followed. During this procedure, care must be taken to avoid contact with metal parts. 

If this mechanism did not work, it should not be pressed. So if a few seconds have passed and the start does not occur, it is necessary to leave it, because this could have major consequences, such as overheating of the starter cables or a short circuit.

A less complex option is through a portable starter, only that you must have this equipment at hand to be able to use it and one of the big problems is that the vast majority of people do not have it because they have not needed it. .

These devices are a kind of replacement batteries with high capacity and intensity, with a structure with two clamps. Those clamps should be connected to the discharged battery and the device turned on. Afterwards, the engine can be started and then the red clamp must be removed, followed by the black one.

One of the advantages of these portable devices is that in addition to being used to start a car with a discharged battery, they are also suitable for charging mobile equipment and tablets. The capacity of these devices varies according to the model and brand, in powers ranging from 8,000 to 20,000 mAh. Similarly, some models incorporate several USB ports and flashlights with LED bulbs.
