It could also indicate an inconsistent coolant temperature reading, according to some sources. Apparently, the car takes a coolant temperature reading at shutdown, then a timer tracks how long until the next start, and an algorithm exists for how long the engine should cool down. If the reading is inconsistent, the code and light activate. It takes 3 good cycles to clear the code.

Answer: I looked at this error in three different service manuals I had (2005 LX, 2006 Durango, 2005 Dakota) and they all give similar information.
The CEL turns on after one occurrence, three sequential good trips should turn off the CEL.
The test involves a wiring check from the PCM connector (sorry, I don’t have a service manual for your car that tells you which pins) using the Miller 8815 tool (sounds like a special test light that won’t damage the pins on the PCM connector) with two circuits on off, ignition, start, etc.
These service manuals don’t mention anything about the coolant temperature sensor so I don’t know if that is a difference between these vehicles and your car’s system. So if it’s not the wiring, it’s the PCM.
