Dodge Caravan P0868: Meaning, Causes and Diagnosis

P0868 Dodge Caravan

P0868 is a generic DTC code, meaning it has the same definition for the Dodge Caravan as it does for any other vehicle. This particular code indicates that the transmission fluid pressure is below the minimum operating specifications.

If your Caravan has the code P0868, the first thing you should do is check the transmission fluid. If it is too low, there will not be enough pressure in the transmission for it to function properly. There are other problems that can cause P0868, but by making sure the transmission fluid level is full, you will minimize any potential damage if that ends up being the problem.

Don’t Ignore Low Transmission Fluid

P0868 Dodge Caravan Symptoms

The transmission in your Dodge Caravan is a mechanical device that transfers rotational motion to another location. Automatic transmissions use complex mechanisms to perform this task more efficiently, but they still do fundamentally the same job as manual transmission.

But an automatic transmission is much more complex than a manual one. It uses transmission fluid as a hydraulic fluid to activate solenoids, shift gears, lubricate, and cool. An automatic needs adequate transmission fluid pressure to do all of this. If there isn’t enough, it will burn out and you’ll need a new one, or you’ll have to have it rebuilt.

P0868 Symptoms: Dodge Caravan

Typically, there will be noticeable symptoms related to P0868 in the Caravan. These are the most common.

  • Glide– The most obvious symptom of low transmission fluid pressure is slippage (revs go up, but speed does not). If it starts to slip, either when accelerating or stopping, it means there is not enough transmission fluid pressure to move the vehicle properly.
  • Transmission fluid leak– Look under the spot where you park your caravan regularly. Check for puddles or fresh drops of transmission fluid. It should be red to brown in color, depending on how many miles you have driven and how harsh the driving conditions are.

It is quite possible that there will be no noticeable symptoms at all. This may indicate that the transmission fluid needs changing or that the transmission fluid pressure sensor is bad (more on that later).

Dodge Caravan: P0868 Causes + Diagnosis

P0868 Diagnosis

Here are the most common causes of P0868 in a (somewhat) logical order to address them.

Check transmission fluid

You will need to check your Caravan’s transmission fluid to make sure it is full. Make sure you do it on a flat surface

Even if it is full, it may not be able to do its job properly if it has burned and overheated. Or the fluid may have too much mileage.

Fluid problems are the most common cause of P0868.

Transmission filter

If your Dodge Caravan hasn’t changed its transmission fluid and filter for too long, a clogged filter can cause transmission fluid pressure to drop. The transmission fluid pressure sensor will detect this, and a P0868 will be issued.

Wiring problem

Inspect the wiring harness that goes to the transmission fluid pressure sensor. If it appears to be damaged, it will need to be replaced.

The location of the transmission fluid pressure sensor and the distance it must travel make it more prone to damage than most other cables in your vehicle.

Other possible causes of P0868

  • Faulty transmission pump
  • Bad transmission fluid pressure sensor
  • Faulty transmission temperature sensor
  • Failure of internal transmission parts

As you can see, quite a few problems can cause P0868 on the Dodge Caravan. However, most of the time it will be fluid related. Good luck!
