P0717 is a somewhat rare OBD2 trouble code that can appear on the Dodge Caliber. While the check engine light comes on, the code warns of a transmission-related error, namely that the input shaft/turbine speed sensor is not sending a signal.

It transmits this data to your Caliber’s PCM/TCM, which determines the input shaft speed. At this point, the PCM compares this data with the engine RPM, the output shaft speed sensor, and the vehicle speed.

The input speed sensor is usually bolted or attached to the transmission. It will be close to the crankcase, since it measures the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Check that the ground connection is solid. If there doesn’t appear to be any visible damage, you can check the voltage with a voltmeter.

Repair the wiring harness as necessary.

2. Input speed sensor (very likely)

Now that you’ve verified that the wiring to the intake/turbine speed sensor is working, it’s likely that the sensor itself is malfunctioning and causing P0717 on your Caliber.

If you remove the sensor, check that there are no metal shavings on its magnetic tip. If there are, that may be enough to disrupt the signal. You can try cleaning the chips and see if the sensor works again.

Use a voltmeter to check the voltage entering and leaving the sensor. Otherwise, you may end up replacing a sensor that still works well.

Pull this sensor when the transmission is cold to avoid burning hot ATF.

3. PCM (Not very likely)

It is possible that the PCM is to blame. Just be suspicious if the sensor and wiring seem okay. Check that there are no technical service bulletins related to the Dodge PCM.
